How to select a wheelchair?
What type of chair do I need?
There are standard wheelchairs, transport wheelchairs
and commode wheelchairs.
Standard wheelchairs have large rear wheels and small front wheels. This
allows a caregiver to push the wheelchair, and also allows the user to manually
propel themselves using the rear wheels. It is usually larger and more stable
than a transport wheelchair.
Transport wheelchairs have four small wheels. They can only be pushed by a
caregiver and are easier to maneuver through tight spaces or doorways.
Commode wheelchairs have four small wheels, like a transport wheelchair and a detachable
commode bucket. Some commode wheelchairs have a separate seat attachment. Once
the detachable commode bucket is removed, and the separate seat attachment is
placed, it can be used as a transport wheelchair over small distance.
Standard wheelchairs with commode is a standard wheelchair with a detachable commode.
What sort of materials should I look at when buying a wheelchair?
Seat material – most wheelchairs use polyvinylchloride (PVC) or nylon material for the
seats, which make them easy to clean and maintain. Some seats have padding for
extra comfort.
Wheels – most
standard wheelchairs come with spoke-wheels. Alloy wheels add strength and are
easy to clean.
Tyres – most of our wheelchairs
have solid tyres, so you do not have to worry about pumping air or tyre
punctures. Some wheelchairs have pneumatic tyres, which is more comfortable,
especially on bumpy surfaces, but may need air to be pumped, and can have
punctures, just like a bicycle tyre.
Transport and storage – if you need to take the wheelchair in a vehicle,
check whether it is foldable for easy transport.
Frame – Stainless
steel frames are strong and long-lasting. Powder-coated steel can provide a
cheaper option and can last long if cared for. Aluminium frames are usually
more light-weight and a little more expensive.
