WHAT IS POSTINOR-2 TABLET AND WHAT IS IT USED FOR?
Postinor-2 tablet contains a synthetic luteal hormone-like active substance levonorgestrel. Other excipients: Silica, colloidal anhydrous; magnesium stearate; potato starch; talc; maize starch; lactose. Postinor-2 is an oral emergency contraceptive. It may help to prevent a pregnancy if taken within 72 hours of unprotected sexual intercourse or failure of a contraceptive method.
WHEN CAN POSTINOR-2 TABLET BE USED AND HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE PREPARATION?
Postinor-2 tablet can be used on any day of the menstrual cycle. Emergency contraception is an occasional method; it is suitable only as an emergency measure. Emergency contraception does not prevent a pregnancy in every instance. It has been estimated that Postinor-2 prevents 85% of expected pregnancies. Efficacy appears to decline with time after intercourse (95% within 24-hours, 85% between 24 and 48 hours, 58% if used between 48 and 72 hours). Efficacy after 72 hours is unknown. If you are uncertain about the timing of unprotected intercourse or if you have had unprotected sex more than 72 hours earlier in the same menstrual cycle, conception may have occurred. Treatment with Postinor-2 following the second act of intercourse may therefore be ineffective in preventing pregnancy. Postinor-2 is not as effective as a conventional regular method of contraception. If you think, you need repeated courses of emergency contraception, you should consider long-term methods of contraception.
SPECIAL WARNINGS & PRECAUTIONS FOR USE
If pregnancy occurs after treatment with postinor-2, the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy should be considered. The use of postinor-2 tablet should be considered in patients with severe hepatic dysfunction. Severe malabsorption diseases, such as chron’s diseases might impair the efficacy of postinor-2. Repeated administration within a menstrual cycle is not advisable because of the possibility of disturbance of the cycle. After you have taken postinor-2, it is important that you make an appointment to see your doctor to ask him about regular methods of contraception that are suitable for you. Some medicines you are taking concomitantly may enhance the metabolism of the active ingredient of the preparation, reducing efficacy. These include medicines to treat epilepsy, fungal infections, antibiotics as well as herbal medicines containing hypericum perforatum (St. John’s Worth). Therefore, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist about the PO or OTC medicines you are taking.
HOW WILL THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE CHANGE FOLLOWING ADMINISTRATION OF POSTINOR-2 TABLET?
Although most women will have their next period at the usual time, some will have a later or earlier than normal period. If you period is late by more than 5 days or you have it at the normal time but it is abnormal or if you suspect pregnancy (feeling sick, nausea, vomiting, breast tenderness), you should contact your doctor.
MEASURES TO BE TAKEN IN CASE OF OVERDOSAGE?
Postionr-2 tablet should be taken in the dosage, in the way and for the duration as prescribed by the doctor. Overdose may cause nausea and vaginal bleeding. In this case see your doctor immediately.
WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE UNDESIRABLE EFFECTS OF POSTINOR-2 TABLET AND WHAT TO DO IF THEY OCCUR?
Like all medicines postinor-2 can have side effects. Regarding the frequency of undesirable effects, they might be the following: More than 10%: nausea, low abdominal pain, fatigue, headache, dizziness, breast tenderness. Between 1% and 10%: vomiting, diarrhoea.
