INDICATIONS
For steroid responsive inflammation of the palpebral and bulbar conjunctive, cornea and anterior segment of the globe.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Prednisolone Acetate is contraindicated in most viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva, including superficial (or epithelial) herps simplex keratitis (dendritic keratitis), vaccinia, and varicella. Mycobacterial infection of the eye such as tuberculosis of the eye. Fungal diseases of ocular structures. Patients with hypersensitivity to any component of the product.
WARNING & PRECAUTIONS
In those diseases causing thinning of the cornea, perforation has been reported with the use of topical steroids. Acute purulent infections of the eye may be masked or enhanced by the use of topical steroids. Use of topical corticosteroids may cause increased intraocular pressure in certain individuals. This may result in damage to the optic nerve, with defects in the visual acuity and visual fields. Steroids should be used with caution in the presence of glaucoma; it is advisable that the intraocular pressure should be checked frequently. Prolonged use may result in posterior subcapsular cataract formation. The possibility of adrenal suppression should be considered with prolonged, frequent, use of high dose topical steroids, particularly in infants and children. Eye drops containing corticosteroids should not be used for more than 10 days except under strict ophthalmic supervision with regular checks for intraocular pressure.
DRUG INTERACTIONS
Although the systemic exposure is expected to be low with topical ophthalmic corticosteroid administration, co-treatment with CYP3A inhibitors may increase the risk of corticosteroid related systemic side effects.
ADVERSE REACTIONS
Increased intraocular pressure, with optic nerve damage, defects in the visual fields. Also, posterior subcapsular cataract formation, secondary fungal or viral infections, and perforation of the globe when used in conditions where there is thinning of the cornea and sclera. Systemic side effects may occur with extensive use of steroids.
OVERDOSE
Overdose by the topical ophthalmic route will not ordinarily cause acute problems. If accidentally ingested, drink fluids to dilute and consult your doctor.
