Composition Each film coated tablet contains: Atenolol BP 50mg, Excipients q.s, Color Approved color used in coating.

Introduction: It is relatively cardio selective Beta-adrenoreceptor blocking agent without membrane stabilizing or intrinsic sympathomimetic activities. Following oral dose of 50 or 100 mg, both beta-blocking and antihypertensive effects persist for at least 24 hours, because of higher lipid solubility.

INDICATION AND DOSE: Hypertension: Adult: 25-30 mg daily, higher doses are rarely necessary. Angina: Adult: 100 mg daily in 1-2 divided doses. Arrhythmias: Adult: 50-100 mg daily. Migraine prophylaxis: Adult: 50-200 mg daily in divided doses.

PRECAUTIONS & CONTRAINDICATIONS: The drug is contraindicated in sinus bradycardia, heart block greater than first degree, cardiogenic shock, Concomitant intravenous use of verapamil or diltiazem, overt cardiac failure, anuria or known hypersensitivity reaction to atenolol and nifedipine. Sudden withdrawal may exacerbate angina pectoris & may precipitate M.I. Anesthetic agents may further cause depression of myocardium myocardial toxicity.

Pregnancy and Lactation: There are no adequate data from the use of atenolol in pregnant women to determine its potential harmfulness. Atenolol crosses the placental barrier and appears in the cord blood. Water soluble beta-blockers such as atenolol are present in breast milk in greater amounts than other beta-blockers. Atenolol is excreted into breast milk reaching higher concentration than in plasma.

A risk in the breastfed child cannot be excluded (beta-blockade). Therefore, breast-feeding should be discontinued during treatment with atenolol.

Renal impairment: In patients with impaired renal function, the dose should be adjusted orally maximum 50 mg daily if eGFR 1535mL/minute/1.73m2; maximum 25 mg or 50 mg on alternate days if eGFR less than 15 mL/minute/1.73m2.

Hepatic Impairment: No dose adjustment is necessary.

WARNING: Should not be used in cardiac failure, bronchospastic diseases, diabetes and hypoglycemia.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION: Atenolol has been confused with amlodipine; care must be taken to ensure the correct drug is prescribed and dispensed.

ADVERSE EFFECTS: Bradycardia, cold extremities, leg pain, dizziness, tiredness, fatigue & lethargy, skin rashes and dry eyes.

STORAGE: Store in a dark and dry place, below 300C.
