DESCRIPTION
Desodin is a preparation of desloratadine. It is a metabolite of loratadine. Desloratadine is a long-acting tricyclic histamine antagonist with selective HI-receptor antagonist activity. Desloratadine inhibits histamine release from human mast cells in vitro.
INDICATIONS
Desodin is indicated for the following conditions. Allergic rhinitis: For the relief of the nasal and non-nasal symptoms of allergic rhinitis (Seasonal and perennial). Chronic idiopathic urticaria: For the symptomatic relief of pruritus, reduction in the number of hives. and size of hives. For symptomatic relief of hay fever
CONTRAINDICATION
Desloratadine is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to any of its ingredients, or to loratadine.
SIDE-EFFECTS
Drowsiness, sedation, fatigue, headache, psychomotor impairment, urinary retention. dry mouth, blurred vision, gastro-intestinal disturbances, palpitations, arrhythmias, hypotension, hypersensitivity reactions (including bronchospasm, angioedema, anaphylaxis, rashes and photosensitivity reactions), extrapyramidal effects, dizziness, confusion, depression, sleep disturbances, tremor, convulsions, blood disorders, and liver dysfunction.
DRUG INTERACTIONS
Alcohol enhances the sedative effect of desloratadine.
PRECAUTIONS
Antihistamine should be used with caution in prostatic hypertrophy, urinary retention, glaucoma, and pyloroduodenal obstruction. It should be used with caution in hepatic disease and dose reduction may be necessary in renal impairment. Caution may be required in epilepsy and porphyria. Children and the elderly are more susceptible to side effects.
