COMPOSITION
Each 5mI of suspension contains: Azithromycin dihydrate Equivalent to 200mg Azithromycin.
DESCRIPTION
The active ingredient azithromycin is an azalide, a substance of macrolide antibiotics. Azithromycin binds to the 23S rRNA of the 50S ribosomal subunit of bacteria. It blocks protein synthesis by inhibiting the transpeptidation/translocation step of protein synthesis and by inhibiting the assembly of the 50S ribosomal subunit.
INDICATIONS
Prevention of secondary case of invasive group a streptococcal infection in patients who are allergic to penicillin. Respiratory-track infections, otitis media, skin and soft-tissue infections. Uncomplicated genital chlamydial infections/non-gonococcal urethritis. Uncomplicated gonorrhea. Lyme disease (erythema migrans and or non-focal symptoms). Mild or moderate typhoid due to multiple-antibacterial resistant organisms Community-acquired pneumonia, low to moderate severity Antibacterial prophylaxis for insertion of intra-uterine device.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Azithromycin is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin or any macrolide antibiotic and hepatic impairment.
SIDEEFFECTS
Common or Very Common: Arthralgia. Uncommon: Numbness, Oedema, Photosensitivity reaction. Frequency not known: Kidney injury, Aggression, Akathisia, Hemolytic anemia Syncope.
DRUG INTERACTIONS
Drug interaction studies were performed with azithromycin and other drugs likely to be co-administered. Co administration of azithromycin at therapeutic doses had a modest effect on the pharmacokinetics of atorvastatin, carbamazepine, cetirizine, didanosine, efavirenz, fluconazole, indinavir, midazolam, rifabutin, sildenafil, theophylline (intravenous and oral), triazolam, trimethoprim /sulfamethoxazole and zidovudine. Co-administration with efavirenz, or fluconazole had a modest effect on the pharmacokinetics of azithromycin. Nelfinavir significantly increased the Cmax and AUC of azithromycin. No dosage adjustment of either drug is recommended when azithromycin is co administered with any of the above agents.
