DESCRIPTION

Healing Herbs Cough Syrup is scientifically formulated using a combination of herbal ingredients-Ivy leaf extract, Pelargonium sidoides root extract, Bee's Honey and Menthol which are traditionally used for centuries and clinically proven by latest scientific research to give relief and reduce symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) and lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI).

COMPOSITION

Each 5ml (1 teaspoonful) contains: Ivy leaf extract 75mg, Pelargonium sidoides root extract 18mg, Bee's Honey & Menthol.

ACTIONS

Ivy leaf extract: Ivy leaf extract is used for treatment of catarrh of the respiratory tract and symptoms of chronic inflammatory bronchial conditions as it has following pharmacodynamic actions; Antispasmodic effect: Previous research have shown that alpha-hederin (one of the Ivy leaf's saponin components) activates specific receptors (ß-adrenoreceptors) in the airways causing the muscle to relax and make breathing easier. Secret lytic effect: The soapy effect of Ivy leaf saponins makes mucus less thick so it can be expelled easily. Mucus helps to soothe and lubricate irritated membranes or surfaces in the airways, which can help with irritation and dryness in the respiratory system. The alpha-hederin in Ivy leaf extract encourages the cells in the bronchial system to increase the production and secretion of surfactant. This decreases the surface tension on the liquid film covering the cells that exchange oxygen for carbon dioxide in the lungs (pulmonary alveoli) allowing to breathe freely. The less-viscous secretion is then easier to expectorate, and the irritable or unproductive cough is soothed. Anti-inflammatory effect: Flavonoids in Ivy leaves are able to reduce inflammation as they block the release of histamine. Histamines are released in response to detected allergens, such as in hay fever that can cause inflammation in the respiratory system. Further, Ivy leaf saponins like alpha-hederin and hydrazonoic-C, also exhibit anti-inflammatory effects. Antimicrobial activity: Studies have shown that Ivy leaf extract exhibits activity against strains of Staphylococcus, E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Further, previous studies have shown that Hederacoside C, a saponin in Ivy leaf extract, has exhibited antiviral properties against Influenza virus. Pelargonium sidoides root extract: The mechanism of action of Pelargonium root extract is multifactorial as illustrated below. In-vitro studies have found that it exerts a cytoprotective effect against virus induced cell destruction and also increases release of antimicrobial peptides from neutrophilic granulocytes. Pelargonium root extract was found to act as an immune stimulant as well. Moreover, it inhibits bacterial adhesion to epithelial cells. Bee's Honey: Mechanisms of antimicrobial activity of Bee's Honey is different from antibiotics. The antibacterial activity of honey is related to four properties, which are dehydration of bacteria, inhibition of bacterial growth through its low pH (3.2 4.5), production of hydrogen peroxide by the glucose oxidase and several phytochemical factors for antibacterial activity.

INDICATIONS

Traditionally used for relief from: Dry Cough, Phlegm, Nasal Congestion, Common Cold, Productive Cough, Sore Throat, Runny Nose.

ADVERSE EFFECTS
